History: Star Wars Wiki
Personality:
The Bastard Son
Hux's identity is predicated around the one thing that defined him for so much of his life. He is the bastard son of Commandant Brendol Hux. Brendol's view of Hux, and Hux's own bitterness about his heritage, his father, and his appearance helped to mold and shape him into the clever, cruel, and bitter survivor he is now. Brendol viewed him as small, weak, and soft. What he lacked in strength he grew to make up for in a clever mind, a ruthless drive, and a deadly surety in the ideology of the First Order and where he will one day reside within it. His bitterness toward his father helped Hux develop his cunning and eventually orchestrate his demise, allowing Hux to advance and take over his father's Stormtrooper program. His heritage is what makes Hux fight as hard as he does for his position, and the respect he gets from the men he commands.
The True Believer
Hux is a child of the fallen Empire. His entire life he was raised on stories of the glory of the Empire while witnessing the chaos its fall left behind in the Outer Rim and later across the rest of the galaxy. He saw first hand what the incompetence of the New Republic wrought, and the combination of these influences has made Hux a staunch believer in what the First Order stands for and what it is working toward. He sees the galaxy as chaotic disorder, filled with suffering and confusion, and there is no doubt in his mind that the First Order can bring the known worlds to heel and end the chaos. So firm is his belief that Hux is unwilling to change or even consider that his view of the galaxy might be wrong.
He takes the work his father did to create a new Stormtrooper program similar in vein to that of the old Jedi methods, and improves upon and strengthens it. Hux throws himself wholly into the First Order and dedicates so much of his time and energy to the development of his programs, the training of his men, and the design and order of his ship and every project under his command that he barely allows himself the time to rest and recover, working himself to visible exhaustion and only growing more fiercely determined with every hitch and failure he is faced with. He takes his failures surprisingly well, twisting them into new opportunities to improve. Unfortunately it comes at the cost of his health.
The Rabid Cur
Snoke admits that it is Hux's weakness as a Rabid Cur that is the reason he keeps Hux around and in such a position of power. Despite his arrogance and occasional refusal to bend, Hux's pride and ego, his desperate need to achieve and prove himself, makes him a sharp and deadly tool. Hux fights and plans like a caged and cornered animal when he feels as if his position is in danger or he might be losing ground. It's in these moments, when he is at his most violent and desperate, that Hux makes his chanciest and grandest risks. From the ruthless destruction of the Hosnian System to the impossible tracking of a ship through hyperspace, Hux proves himself time and again.
But while Snoke sees this as a weakness to manipulate, he underestimates Hux in doing so. Hux knows that even with how far he has come he is still seen as the thing he despises. A bastard fighting to prove himself better than the father he loathed. Hux is patient. He knows if he bides his time and plays into the way people view him or the plans they think they can trick him into. Eventually they will slip up and either take for granted that they have something on him or have him on a leash, and when they grow complacent or careless, Hux will make his move.
The Clever General
There is no question that Hux is a closed off man, aloof and isolated in his emotions with few friends and even fewer people to trust. But while it is true that Hux's ambition, sharp tongue, and pride can make him hard to like, he is well respected by his men. Hux's command of the First Order came at the cost of hard work, ambition, dedication, and Hux's depth of knowledge of the First Order, its workings, and his extensive military training. Because he earned his command, he has a surprisingly different relationship with the men and women who serve under him than most in the Empire ever had. His firm leadership, oratory skills, and ability to keep a level head in a crisis have earned him the respect and loyalty of those under his command even in the heat of a disastrous battle. As a result, his men also remain calm and resolved to continue the fight so long as Hux is still present.
He can not afford weakness, and as a result he has a stranglehold of control on his emotions. Separating himself from his emotions allows him to press on through difficult decisions or situations. He began commanding subordinates when he was still a frail, frightened child. His father (for all he hated Hux) and Rae Sloane both ensured and helped mold Hux into an excellent soldier. He was raised to learn the ins and outs of military tactics and strategy, weapons, training soldiers, marksmanship, and martial-arts training. By placing Hux in command of a group of his murder children, Brendol unwittingly created a monster from his son. Hux took that power after a young lifetime of feeling powerless, and ran with it. With his newfound strength, he threw himself even harder into learning the ins and outs of his father's Stormtrooper program. He became proficient in the technology and science around him in addition to developing practical knowledge, all of which he used to work on the simulations and conditioning used in the Stormtrooper program, the technology of his ship, and the powerful former superweapon that was Starkiller Base.
The Aspiring Emperor
Ultimately it is Hux's ambition that drives him above all else. He is a proud and arrogant man, but he is a man who knows what he wants. The galaxy needs order. It needs a government that can control it and provide it with the security and firm direction it needs. Hux believes that he is the one to provide that, and while he will continue to bide his time and work his way through the ranks, he has his eyes set on a particular goal. He believes he is owed and entitled to the position of emperor. Until then, he has his sights set on the title of Grand Marshal.
